The Three-Period Lesson: A Core Montessori Technique
The three-period lesson is one of the simplest and most powerful techniques in the Montessori method. It is used to teach vocabulary and concepts in small, clear steps, and it can be adapted for children from two years old upwards. Trainee teachers learn it early because it underpins so much of the classroom work.
Period one: naming
The teacher shows one object at a time and names it clearly: “This is red.” Nothing else is asked of the child. The aim is simply to link the object and the word. For a young child, one or two objects in a session is enough.
Period two: recognition
The teacher asks the child to find or point to the object: “Show me red. Put the red one here.” This is the longest period and the most important. The teacher can vary the instruction, move objects around and check understanding without pressure. If the child makes a mistake, the teacher gives the name again and repeats the activity another day.
Period three: recall
The teacher points to the object and asks: “What is this?” Now the child must produce the word. Only move to this period when the child is consistently successful at recognition, because testing too early can damage confidence.
Why the sequence works
The lesson moves from input to recognition to recall, which mirrors how memory works. Each period is short, and the teacher observes rather than quizzes. The technique is also diagnostic: a child’s response tells the teacher exactly where support is needed.
Using it in the classroom
The three periods are used for colours, shapes, textures, sounds, numbers and language cards. They work best with real objects or precise materials, in a quiet place, with full attention. A lesson that lasts two minutes and is repeated over several days is more effective than a long session.
In our Montessori training, trainees practise the three-period lesson with each other and with children, learning the exact language and pace.
