The Montessori Method: A Beginner’s Guide
The Montessori method is one of the most widely used approaches to early childhood education in the world, and it is at the heart of the teacher training programmes offered by the Kerala Education Council. If you are considering a career in pre-primary education, or you are a parent trying to understand what happens in a Montessori classroom, this guide covers the essentials.
Who was Maria Montessori?
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who developed her method in the early 1900s while working with young children in Rome. She observed that children learn best when they are free to choose activities in a carefully prepared environment, rather than sitting still and listening to a teacher. Her approach spread across Europe and later to India, where it took root in pre-primary and nursery education.
The core principles
- The prepared environment: a calm, ordered classroom where every material has a place and is accessible to the child.
- Self-directed activity: children choose work that interests them and repeat it as often as they need to.
- Hands-on learning: ideas are taught through concrete materials before they become abstract.
- Mixed-age groups: younger children learn by watching older ones, and older children reinforce their own learning by helping.
- Observation: the teacher watches closely, records progress, and introduces the next material at the right moment.
Why it matters in Indian pre-primary classrooms
Many pre-primary classrooms still rely on rote learning and worksheets. The Montessori approach offers a practical alternative: children develop concentration, independence and a genuine interest in learning. Teachers who understand the method can plan activities that suit each child instead of teaching to the middle of the class.
How KEC training covers it
Our Montessori Teacher Training course combines the theory of child development with practical work on the materials used in a real classroom. Trainees learn how to prepare an environment, present activities, observe children and maintain records. The course is available in regular batches and in holiday or correspondence mode for working teachers.
