What Does a Montessori Teacher Do Every Day?
People outside the classroom often assume that a Montessori teacher simply supervises children while they play. In practice, the role is carefully structured. The teacher prepares the environment, observes each child, presents new activities and keeps detailed records. Here is what a typical day looks like.
Before the children arrive
The day starts early. The teacher checks that every shelf is in order, that materials are complete and clean, and that the classroom is calm and ready. In Montessori practice, the environment itself teaches, so a missing piece or a cluttered shelf disturbs the children’s work.
Arrival and circle time
Children are greeted individually. A short group session follows, with songs, calendar work, news from home or a story. Circle time sets the tone for the day and gives the teacher a chance to notice who seems tired, upset or unusually quiet.
Presentations and the work cycle
The teacher presents a new material to one child or a small group, demonstrating slowly and precisely, then steps back. Children then choose their own work and repeat it. The teacher moves around the room, observing, helping where needed and noting what each child is mastering.
Observation and records
Observation is a formal part of the job. Teachers record which activities a child chooses, how long they concentrate, and where they need support. These notes guide the next presentation and form the basis of conversations with parents.
Outdoor play, meals and rest
Movement is part of the curriculum. Outdoor play develops gross motor skills and gives children a break from focused work. Meals are treated as a practical life activity, with children helping to set up, serve and clean away.
Talking to parents
The end of the day often involves brief conversations with parents about a child’s progress, behaviour or a concern at home. Clear, calm communication builds the partnership that early childhood education depends on.
After the children leave
Materials are checked and restored, notes are completed, and the next day’s presentations are planned. A Montessori classroom is never finished being prepared.
If this sounds like the kind of work you would enjoy, our teacher training programmes combine the theory with the practical routines described here, so that you enter a classroom knowing what to do on day one.
