Avoiding Burnout: Self-Care for Early Years Teachers
Teaching young children is joyful and physically demanding. Teachers are on their feet all day, managing noise, emotions, safety and parents’ expectations. It is not surprising that many early years teachers feel exhausted by the end of term. Burnout is common, but it is not inevitable.
Know the signs
- Feeling drained before the day begins.
- Irritability with children, colleagues or parents over small things.
- Difficulty sleeping or constant tiredness.
- Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy.
- Cynicism about the work or a sense of not making a difference.
Protect your basic routines
Sleep, food and movement are not luxuries; they are the foundation of patience. A teacher who sleeps badly will run out of calm by mid-morning. Keep meal times regular, drink water during the day, and take short breaks where possible.
Set boundaries
Finish the day with a closing routine: tidy your space, write tomorrow’s notes, then stop. Avoid taking every parent message at every hour. Clear, published office hours help families and protect staff.
Use your colleagues
Talk to other teachers. A short conversation about a difficult class or a difficult day can relieve pressure and produce practical ideas. Good schools build time for staff to meet. If your school does not, ask for it.
Keep learning and keep perspective
Professional development, including refresher training, can renew interest and remind you why you chose this work. So can watching a colleague teach well. Burnout often grows when the work becomes repetitive and isolated.
Ask for help when needed
If low mood, anxiety or exhaustion persists for weeks, speak to a doctor or counsellor. Seeking help is a professional decision, not a weakness, and it protects the children in your care as much as yourself.
Our training includes classroom management and professional wellbeing, because sustaining a long teaching career requires more than subject knowledge.
